The HSM Powerline StoreEx HDS 150 takes anything up to a 3.5 inch drive and cuts it to a 40mm strip at H-3, which under DIN 66399 also carries T-1 for tape and E-2 for electronic media, so drives, LTO and DLT tapes, optical discs, USB sticks and solid state all go through the same machine at up to 210 drives an hour. Power comes off a normal three pin 13 amp socket. If the loading bay has nothing usable, we run it off our 7kw Hyundai dual fuel generator in the back of the van, which makes the whole job self contained. A site survey comes first, because floor loading and access decide whether the machine goes into your office or stays downstairs.
Some buildings will not take the machine. Lifts are too small, floor loading will not carry it, or security will not have a generator near the building, and in those cases we bring the two person kit instead. The Verity Systems SV91m degausser is NATO approved under stock number 5836-99-591-3345 and meets the NSA and CESG requirements for sanitising classified information, putting 7,000 Gauss through a drive in about twelve seconds at 20 drives or 40 tapes an hour. We then punch a hole through the platters with a Baileigh 3 ton arbor press, modified with a 2.5 inch hardened steel spike. The drives travel back to Heathrow in tamper evident sealed cases, with the seal numbers logged against the serial list, and go through the shredder there. It is slower than shredding on site, and we will tell you so.
Every drive is read with a handheld barcode scanner before it goes in, so make, model and serial land on the certificate of destruction rather than a count on a clipboard, and if your asset register says forty drives and we scan thirty nine, you will hear about it that day rather than at the next audit. Where a drive is being wiped and kept in service rather than shredded, we erase to the NIST 800-88 standard and the wipe report joins the same record. Visible asset tags come off the chassis so nothing traces back to you. What is left of the drive goes to our approved precious metal refiners, and the non data hardware goes to an Approved Authorised Treatment Facility that issues WEEE certification, so nothing goes to landfill. All of it moves under our own waste carrier, broker and dealer registration with the Environment Agency, upper tier, Reg No CBDU551195.
